South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has begun campaigning ahead of the country's parliamentary elections which could see it face a strong challenge from a breakaway group.
"The most important task of the beginning of the year is to ensure that the ANC returns a decisive election victory," the 66-year-old leader said of the poll which is expected to be held in the first half of the year.
Standing in front of banner declaring "Working together, we can do more", Zuma outlined the priority areas for the next five years: job creation, education, health, rural development, land reform and the fight against crime and corruption.
He also said South Africa would work to find solutions in the continent's current hot spots: from Zimbabwe and Somalia to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
O ANC começou a campanha para as legislativas. Zuma assume um programa arrojado, como por exemplo tornar a África do Sul na potência africana com capacidade para determinar o rumo de África, desde o Cabo até ao corno de África. Será interessante saber o que pensará Luanda desta ambição.
Porém, há certas incongruências. Como é que o líder do ANC promete combater a corrupção se ele é um mau exemplo neste âmbito, dados os processos em que está envolvido e é acusado?
O surgir do COPE, dissidentes do ANC leais ao antigo Presidente sul-africano Thabo Mbeky, pode ajudar a melhorar o sistema democrático, dominado pelo partido de Mandela desde o fim do Apartheid.
